Maternal Recovery Services celebrating National Recovery Month with Outreach Events and Facebook Live

Berks County, PA-The Maternal Recovery Services (MRS) Program, a program of The Children’s Home of Reading is celebrating with service providers and members across the nation recognize September as National Recovery Month.

The rate of current drug use among the youngest and possibly the most vulnerable pregnant women has been the highest (16.2% for 15- to 17 year-olds) compared with 7.4% among 18- to 25 year-olds and 1.9% among 26- to 44- year-olds.

Prenatal substance abuse continues to be a significant problem in the United States and leads to consequential health risks for the developing fetus.

“We’d like to celebrate the women who have graduated, and recognize those who are currently participating in our program, and those throughout the Berks county community who are providing critical recovery support services for individuals living in recovery as well as those who are just starting on their path”, said Jill Troutman, vp of advancement, marketing and communications.

The MRS program addresses the special needs of substance using and recovering Berks County pregnant and parenting women and their children; by assisting them in becoming involved with drug and alcohol treatment providers, hospitals, clinics and other social service agencies to begin the process of improving the quality of life for the women and their children.

According to SAMHSA’s 2017 National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH): 20.7 million people aged 12 or older needed substance use treatment.  Just 4 million people aged 12 or older received any substance use treatment in the past year.

MRS program also offers evidence based and educational programming at no cost as part of their outreach to, local community groups, churches, clinics, shelters, recovery houses, community health centers, other social service agencies.  Over the past few years MRS has provided evidence based programming at the Berks county prison for the female inmates; and is currently working with Pennsylvania Adult and Teen Challenge.

“We want to help families throughout our community and make an impact today and for the future of Berks County,” says Troutman.

All are invited to a Facebook Live Event on September 14, at 6pm. where a short presentation on services will be discuss.  For more information please visit www.buildingkidslives.org or call 610-478-8266.
