Help A Girl Out Drive Delivers Dignity and Respect

Menstrual equity and disparity is shows up every day throughout our programs. A mother may have to decide between watering down formula so she can purchase tampons, a young girl is absent from school because she doesn’t have pads and her family doesn’t have money until they get paid tomorrow.

These real life situations are where the Help A Girl Out Feminine Product and Diaper Drive donations fill the need. This year, a roughly $3,700 of products were collected by businesses, schools and organizations throughout Berks County. Suzanne Cody of MG Architects, Berks Women In Motion, Junior League led the collection for the non-profit beneficiaries , The Children’s Home of Reading(CHOR), Opportunity House, LGBT Center of Greater Reading, and Safe Berks.

“We are so lucky to be the beneficiary of such support. It relieves so many of our clients a burden and allows them to not have to worry about making a tough choice or going without,” said Jill Troutman, VP of advancement, marketing and communications for CHOR.

“This year was amazing, we received 5809 pads, 2122 tampons, 893 baby diapers, 1372 wipes, 39 pairs of period underwear and 14 menstrual cups or 10,249 pieces and will help more than 350 people this coming year,” said Troutman, “the generosity of this community to come together to support this initiative sparks hope for our staff and clients and they are so grateful. It is refreshing to know that people care about others.”
